eero has been tested for compatibility with most major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United States, Canada, UK, EU (France, England, Germany, Italy & Spain), Japan, and Australia.
As long as you can connect your gateway eero to a modem or upstream device with an Ethernet cable, you should be able to set up and use eero. If you don’t currently have an ISP, please see this article.
Requirements to setup eero:
- eero iOS app or Android app
- Minimum iOS version 15.0 and minimum Android OS version 9.0
- At least one eero with ethernet ports (the beacon and eero 6 extender cannot be used to start a network but can be added to an existing network)
- Mobile device with a data connection (If you don't have access to a data connection, see our workaround instructions here.)
- Internet service provided into your home
- You will need to have a download speed of at least 1 Mbps – this is the minimum suggested speed for eero to function properly
- ONT or Modem (if required)
Some modems and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) require special configurations. If you're unsure what your ISP uses, we recommend reaching out to your service provider to confirm any special setup requirements. For more information on advanced configurations, please see specifics below:
Advanced Configurations
Combo Modem/Routers
Many ISPs provide a single device that acts as a modem and a router simultaneously. If you have one of these devices, you should:
- Follow the setup instructions in the eero app. When the app asks you to connect your gateway eero to your modem, attach your gateway eero directly to your modem/router combo device via Ethernet.
- When prompted to create a network name, select a unique network name (SSID) for your eero network.
- [Optional] After setting up your eeros, you can optimize the performance of your network by turning off the routing and WiFi functionality of your combo device. You do this by putting it in bridge mode. This step is not mandatory.
Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
An ONT is similar to a cable modem, but functions for fiber networks. These can come in all shapes and sizes and may not always be visible. Some ONTs may be located on the outside of the building with an adapter that converts the fiber connection to ethernet or coax located inside.
No Modem/Ethernet Wall Jack
Some ISPs don't require their users to have a modem. This is commonly found in apartment complexes where the only equipment visible in the residence is an ethernet jack. In these instances, users should skip the modem instructions in the eero app and instead plug their gateway eero into the Ethernet jack on their wall.
Bundled Services
Some ISPs require customers to use their networking equipment for special configurations or services like TV and phone. In most of these cases, we suggest setting up the eero behind your existing router in double nat or bridge mode. In some instances, ISPs have specific requirements needed to use another router with their service. See below for more information on specific ISP settings:
PPPoE, Static IP, and VLAN
eero supports all three of these protocols, for more information, see our dedicated article: Configuring Internet service provider (ISP) settings.
MAP-E/Dual Stack Lite
MAP-E and Dual Stack Lite are both protocols for IPv4 to IPv6 transition. eero supports full Dual Stack IPv6, we do not currently support MAP-E or DS-lite. If your ISP requires these protocols, we suggest setting up the eero behind your existing router in double nat or bridge mode.
