eero Business networks now support multiple public static IP addresses on your LAN (Local Area Network). This lets you remotely access your network and business-critical devices and servers. eero doesn't directly lease static IP addresses, but you can lease multiple static IP addresses through your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for remote access convenience.
Note: All ports and services on configured client devices will be exposed to the public internet when using public IP addresses. This may expose your device or network to malicious actors. eero doesn't provide a firewall for public subnets and strongly recommends implementing your own firewall.
What is a Public IP?
A public IP address is an IP address that's unique to the entire Internet. Public IPs can be accessed globally, so they're often used by publicly accessible entities such as websites and servers.
Businesses often need more than one public IP address to:
- Provide remote access to networks
- Improve reliability of communication
- Host their own servers
- Simplify DNS server management
Multiple Public IPs for businesses can make it easier for employees to work remotely and manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Having a Public IP address greatly simplifies the setup and management of DNS servers, making it quicker and easier for customers to find a business's websites and services.
How does a Static IP get set up for eero Business?
This feature is only available to customers that purchase eero Business with static IP service through select eero ISP partners. It can only be used on eero Business networks.
Setup process:
- An ISP technician will first install and activate a business network
- The main eero will receive an IP address from the ISP's DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server or be configured manually by the ISP technician
- After the business network setup is complete, the installer will configure a subnet of static public IP addresses in the eero app
- Client devices that need public IPs will be connected (wired or wirelessly) to the gateway or additional eeros
- Any device that you wish to set up with a public IP will need to be on the Main Network SSID/Segment
- You'll then manually configure a static public IP address from this subnet on the desired client device
How do I manually configure a Static IP on my devices?
Once a static subnet has been configured, the eero gateway will take up the first usable IP address in your leased range for itself. Your other usable IP addresses can be statically configured on the client devices as needed.
To locate your available range of static IP addresses:
- Open the eero App, and tap Settings in the bottom-right corner
- Tap Advanced networking
- Select Public Static IP
You can reach out to your ISP to get information on what subnet they've set up and ask about available IPs for your devices.
Example: /28 subnet
You'll get a total of 16 addresses, with 14 usable for clients:
- Your main eero uses: 1 address (the first usable IP)
- Available for your devices: 13 addresses
Example: /29 subnet (203.0.113.0/29)
You'll have a total of 8 addresses (203.0.113.0 - 203.0.113.7), with 6 usable for hosts (203.0.113.1 - 203.0.113.6):
- The gateway eero takes: 203.0.113.1 (first usable IP address)
- Available for client devices: 5 addresses (203.0.113.2 - 203.0.113.6)
Setting up a static IP on your client device
- Refer to your device's user manual for specific instructions
- Select one of the available addresses from your subnet configuration
- Implement your own firewall (strongly recommended)
