eero Upgrade Recommendation

The eero App now works actively to ensure that your network is fully optimized to support the most advanced devices on your network. Using the Upgrade report, you can now identify whether devices on your network could benefit from upgraded eero hardware, as well as view recommendations for the hardware that best suits your needs.

Rather than generally advising upgrading to the newest and most advanced hardware that eero offers, Upgrade report is designed to recommend specific upgrades based on your current network and device ecosystem. Use the information provided to better understand the potential performance of your favorite devices and make the upgrade that makes the most sense for you.

Wifi compatibility

Modern wifi performance is governed by a combination of hardware and connection and security protocols that are combined to create what is known as Wi-Fi standards. Any device with wifi capability must adhere to a defined Wi-Fi standard, which gives a general idea of its performance capabilities. Some examples of common wifi standards are:

  • Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n)
  • Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)
  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)

While all eeros are compatible with Wi-Fi 5 and older devices,, not all eeros are compatible with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7. To compensate for this, those devices can connect using Wi-Fi 5, ensuring compatibility but limiting potential performance.

Generating a report

The Upgrade report can be accessed by tapping on a notification card that appears near the bottom of the App’s home page, or alternatively by going to Settings > Troubleshooting. Once active, the App will generate a report based on the devices currently connected to your network.

The report will identify the number and capabilities of your eero devices, focusing on eeros that are compatible with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7. It will then analyze each device connected to the network to identify their capabilities.

Complete compatibility across the board will result in a successful report. Complete compatibility can be easily defined in the following terms:

  • No Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 devices on a network
  • No Wi-Fi 7 devices on a Wi-Fi 6 or older network
  • Wi-Fi 7 or older devices on a Wi-Fi 7 network

In the event that one or more of your devices are found to support a newer Wi-Fi standard than the eeros on your network support, the Upgrade report will inform you of which devices are performing with limited capabilities.

On a Wi-Fi 6 network, only Wi-Fi 7 devices will be identified by the report. On a network without eeros that are compatible with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7, both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 devices will appear in the report.

Upgrade recommendations

While upgrading to the newest and most advanced hardware is a generally good idea for ensuring maximum compatibility now and in the future, your Upgrade report will provide you with a better understanding of the specific needs of your network. A network with no Wi-Fi 7 devices but several Wi-Fi 6 devices may be served just as well with Wi-Fi 6 eero hardware such as the eero 6 or eero Pro 6E.

The app will provide you with additional links to the Amazon store page if you wish to upgrade your eero hardware. If you would like additional information or wish to speak to customer support, you may use the Contact support link at the bottom of the report.

Additional Questions

Do I need to upgrade my eeros to use my devices?

No. Because newer devices can connect to wireless networks using “legacy” Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 5, you do not need to upgrade your eero hardware to ensure basic functionality for your connected devices. Upgrading your network does, however, ensure that you are getting the best performance out of your newest devices.

What eeros are compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7?
