Your Gateway eero is the eero connected directly to your modem, modem/router combo, or ONT. You can replace it with either an eero already on your network or a brand new eero.
How do I swap my Gateway eero with another eero on my network?
If you want to swap your Gateway eero with one of your eero access points, follow these steps:
- Unplug the eero you want to use as your new Gateway from power
- Unplug both your modem and Gateway eero from power
- Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your Gateway, then connect it to the new Gateway eero
- Wait 3 minutes for your modem to fully power cycle. Make sure you have your new Gateway eero's original power adapter
- Power your modem on and wait until the indicator light shows it's online again. Depending on your modem, this can take several minutes
- Power on your new Gateway eero. Your network will automatically recognize it as the Gateway eero once the LED turns solid white
How do I replace my Gateway eero with a new eero?
If you recently bought a new eero and want to use it as your Gateway eero, follow these steps:
- Disable wifi and switch to cellular data on the device with the eero App installed. Your network will be offline for about 10 minutes
- Open the eero App and tap the Home tab
- Tap the
(blue plus icon) in the top-right corner
- Tap Replace eero
- Tap the Gateway eero. It will have “Gateway” under its name
- Follow the on-screen instructions
- Your network will automatically recognize the new eero as the Gateway once its LED turns solid white
Note: If you're using PPPoE, you may be prompted to re-enter your PPPoE credentials during the Gateway swap process. See Configuring Internet service provider (ISP) settings.
Once your new Gateway eero has a solid white LED, your network is back online.
