eero Plus: Troubleshooting Unusual Network Activity

Activity Center

You may sometimes observe some unusual, or unexpected, activity in the eero Plus Activity Center, located in the eero App. As an eero Plus subscriber, you have tools available that can help you better understand what this activity is, and, if it is malicious, how to take action to protect yourself.

eero Plus’s Advanced Security monitoring includes a feature called Threat Blocks. This means, eero Plus automatically inspects each site you visit for potentially harmful content. If a security inspection determines that a site is potentially malicious, it will block the site before it loads. Sometimes a connected device may exhibit a sharp increase in threat blocks and may be an indication of a potential issue if that device is behaving abnormally. To investigate further, you can view devices with suspicious activity by following the steps below.

How to use the Activity Center to find suspicious devices:

  1. Open eero Activity Center in the eero App. (You can scroll  through previous weeks if needed.)
  2. Click on the Threat Blocks tile.
  3. Review any Top Devices listed that show an increase in threat blocks.
  4. Follow troubleshooting steps listed below to quarantine, block, or reset the device.

Below are a few options for addressing this and other security issues.

Quarantine Options

Listed below are two quarantine options for dealing with devices that may be affected by suspicious network activity. Quarantining the device limits network access for affected devices.

Option 1: Connect using the guest network

The eero guest network uses a separate LAN that is isolated from your primary network, meaning that devices connected to it cannot communicate with devices on your other networks. In addition, devices that are connected to the guest network are isolated from each other even when on the same network, creating an additional layer of security.

Activating the guest network:

  1. Open the eero application
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the bottom right
  3. From the menu, tap on Guest Access
  4. Toggle Guest Network to Enable

Move the affected device to the guest network:

  1. Forget the main wifi network on the affected device
  2. Connect the device to the guest network

Option 2: Blocking the device

You can use the eero App to block any device connected to your network, preventing it from accessing the internet.

  1. Open the eero App and tap on Devices
  2. Tap on the device you want to block
  3. Tap on the three dots icon in the upper right corner
  4. Select the option to Block device

Additional Options

If you believe a device has been affected by a network intrusion or malware infection, here are a few additional options you can consider:

Antivirus Software

You can use antivirus software to isolate and remove malware from your device, dependent upon compatibility.

Delete Suspicious Apps/software

Third-party apps or software downloaded on client devices such as phones, computers, smart TVs, media streaming devices, tablets, etc; could cause network intrusions. Delete any recently-added apps or uninstall recently-added software, especially those from unknown developers.

Factory Reset the Device

A factory reset may remove unwanted malware from an affected device. Please note that this option will erase all data, making it important to back up important files first.

Contact Manufacturer

If you are unable to or uncomfortable following troubleshooting recommendations, we recommend contacting the device manufacturer. The manufacturer will have specific recommendations for dealing with suspicious network activity. This option may be necessary for devices that are not compatible with traditional antivirus software.

Proactive Precautions

You can take steps to ensure that devices on your eero network remain secure, even if you aren’t currently encountering suspicious activity. The following precautions can decrease your chances of a device becoming vulnerable to malware or malicious attacks.

  • Regularly update firmware / software on your devices
  • Change default usernames and passwords after setting up new devices
  • Wherever possible, disable remote access to a device if it is not needed
  • If devices don’t need access to other devices on the network, you can place them on the guest network to restrict their local network access
