When eero Signal provides backup connectivity, speeds will be lower than your normal internet connection because it uses cellular data instead of your internet service provider.
During failover, you can typically expect speeds of 14-48 Mbps for downloads and 3-23 Mbps for uploads. These speeds can be affected by a variety of factors, including network coverage and congestion, physical obstructions, and others. Your backup speeds may not match your subscribed internet plan speeds. eero Signal is not a primary internet connection. Tasks like large file transfers may take longer than on your wired internet plan.
What affects my backup speeds?
Physical obstructions — Place eero Signal at the location with the best cellular reception in your home, and avoid placing it in cabinets or the basement. You can connect it to any compatible eero in that location.
Network coverage and congestion — Cellular network speeds can vary based on coverage in your area, time of day, and local network traffic.
Network activity — eero Signal uses cellular data, so speeds will be lower than your normal internet connection.
Can I control which devices use backup?
Yes. You can pause non-essential devices during backup. This saves cellular data for important devices.
To choose which devices can use backup:
- Open the eero app and tap the Internet row on the home page
- Scroll to the bottom of the page to find Backup usage
- Tap Devices
- Select which devices you want to allow to use backup internet
How do I fix slow speeds?
Check cellular signal strength
Move eero Signal to where you get the strongest cellular signal. Connect it to any compatible eero in that location.
Reduce network demand
During backup mode, limit high-bandwidth activities. Pause video streaming or large downloads. You can also fully block devices while on backup using the eero App. This preserves speed for essential tasks.
Monitor your data usage
You'll get notifications when you're running low on data. Your backup connection stops when you run out of data.
Check for service issues
Cellular speeds can vary based on local network conditions. If speeds are consistently slow, contact eero Support.
