How do I set up eero?

Setting up eero is quick and easy. The eero App automatically guides you through the entire setup process, from connecting your first eero to creating your wifi network.

This guide provides an overview of the setup steps you can refer to during setup. Whether you're replacing an existing router or setting up a network for the first time, the process takes just a few minutes.

What do I need for setup?

Your eero packaging contains most of the equipment you need to set up your eero system. The following equipment is needed for setup:

  • An eero with an Ethernet port built-in for gateway setup
  • Power cord
  • Ethernet cable
  • Internet connection (modem, fiber ONT, or cellular) with connection speed at least 1 Mbps

Note: Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are compatible with eero, provided they meet the above speed requirements. For specific guidance on ISP compatibility, refer to:

You will also need the eero App on your mobile device, requiring at least iOS 15 (iOS) or Android 9.0 (Android).

Step 1: Unplug your modem and router

Disconnect your existing modem and router. You will reconnect your modem later. Remember your wifi name and password for future use.

Note: If you have a fiber ONT or other device that doesn't use a standard power connection, you can proceed without powering it off.

Step 2: Connect eero to your modem

Plug the included Ethernet cable into any port on your eero, then connect the other end to your modem, fiber ONT, or modem/router combo.

Step 3: Power on your modem and eero

Plug your modem and eero into power. The eero's status light will blink white when it powers on. If your modem has status lights, they will also blink.

Step 4: Connect eero to the cloud

Your eero will connect to the cloud via the app. This happens automatically, but you may be prompted to enter your eero's serial number.

Once connected, your eero's status light will turn solid blue.

Step 5: Set your eero's location

Set a location name for your eero so you can recognize it on the network. You can select from the available options or set a custom location.

Step 6: Create your wifi network

Give your network a wifi name and password. You can use your existing wifi name and password to have all your connected devices automatically join your new eero network.

Once your network name and password are entered, registration will complete and your network will be online. You can tap Finish Setup to complete the process and return to the app, or tap Add another eero to add more eeros to the network.

Optional: Add eeros to your network

If you have additional eeros to add to your network, you can do so easily once the gateway eero has been set up. Although an Ethernet-capable eero is required for gateway setup, any eero can be added to the network.

When adding eeros to your network, keep in mind the following placement tips:

  • Place centrally: If you have a dead spot, place your new eero between the dead spot and another eero to ensure a strong connection
  • Keep it in the open: eeros communicate best when they're not closed in—don't place your eeros inside a media console or cabinet, behind or underneath large furniture
  • Away from large electronics: Avoid placing your eero in front, on top, or under electronics or appliances as metal objects can block wifi signals

Any eero with an Ethernet port can be connected to your network wirelessly or via Ethernet backhaul for a faster and more reliable connection. Devices without an Ethernet port can only be connected wirelessly.

Final Step: Connect devices to your network

Once you have set up your network and added any additional eeros, you can start connecting your devices.

If you used the same wifi name and password as your previous router, many devices may connect to the new network automatically. If a device doesn't automatically connect, you can toggle wifi off and then on again to reconnect it, or reboot the device.
