What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP). It ensures information sent through the internet reaches the correct destination. IPv6 is gradually replacing the previous IPv4 standard. It introduces advanced features that can make the internet faster and more secure.

IPv6 addresses use both letters and numbers, unlike older IPv4 addresses. This is crucial to allow many billions of devices to exist at the same time on the internet.

For devices talking to each other on your home network, IPv6 uses "link-local" addresses. Your router assigns these addresses. For devices connecting to the internet, IPv6 uses "global" addresses. Your internet company assigns these addresses.

Does eero support IPv6?

Yes, eero supports IPv6. Your main eero will automatically assign link-local addresses to devices as they join your network. It's common for eeros and devices to request more than one link-local address.

If your internet provider supports global IPv6 addresses, you can enable them in the eero app with the IPv6 feature.

  1. In the eero app, tap the Settings tab in the bottom-right corner
