Point-to-Point (P2P) is a communication technique that allows for a private data connection between two or more locations. In WiFi terms, P2P allows for the transmission of data over longer distances, enabling you to increase the overall service area of your network without having to rely on lengthy Ethernet cables.
How Does P2P Work?
Historically, P2P used directional antennas to transmit data to a specified location. The technology and hardware behind P2P enables communication over long distances, providing users with the means to bring WiFi coverage to large and open spaces, particularly outdoors. P2P connections are secure, meaning that data passed through these connections doesn’t travel through the public internet.
Thanks to its ability to reliably provide connectivity over longer distances, P2P has become a popular choice for homeowners looking to expand their wireless network outdoors, as well as businesses looking to wirelessly connect multiple buildings.
Does eero support P2P Installations?
We are excited to announce that eero supports P2P installations via the eero Outdoor 7. The eero Outdoor 7’s large coverage area allows it to make use of P2P to communicate with the rest of the eeros on your network, whether they are other eero Outdoor 7s, or indoor models such as the eero Max 7.
How does P2P work with eero?
Traditional eero hardware broadcasts a signal in an omni-directional pattern that allows it to reach out in all directions to connect with potential client devices, as well as other eeros on the network. Omni-directional broadcasting creates a “bubble” of connectivity that offers a convenient way to blanket an entire home with WiFi, but often does not expand beyond the borders of the home.
The eero Outdoor 7 works by combining the long-distance functionality of P2P with the power and utility of eero’s TrueMesh. You can expand a home network to the backyard, or connect multiple eero Outdoor 7 units for even more coverage outdoors.
There are no additional special requirements for adding an additional eero Outdoor 7 to your existing home network via P2P. Thanks to TrueMesh, you can place your eero Outdoor 7 without needing to align it directly with other indoor units. Whether it’s a gazebo, casita, workshop or anywhere you need outdoor coverage, you can add a second eero Outdoor 7 without having to worry about alignment.
Where should I place my eero Outdoor 7?
P2P connections work best in elevated conditions where the signal can travel with fewer obstructions. The optimal recommended height for the eero Outdoor 7 is 6-15 feet above ground level to provide proper clearance. For more information on how to correctly install the eero Outdoor 7, refer to the eero Outdoor 7 Installation guide.
As mentioned above, the eero Outdoor 7 does not need to be in direct line of sight with another indoor eero unit in order to receive a signal. However, to ensure high speed connectivity on 5GHz, we recommend installing the eero Outdoor 7 within 50 feet of the closest indoor eero.
If installing multiple eero Outdoor 7 units on a network, they can be installed within 1000 feet of the next nearest outdoor device. While eeros do not have to face each other in order to function properly, it is recommended to avoid placing eeros between common outdoor obstructions such as patio furniture, trees, or vehicles.
