eero Outdoor 7 Frequently Asked Questions

The eero Outdoor 7 is eero’s first outdoor environment router. We've compiled a list of commonly asked questions that should help to better inform you about eero Outdoor 7 and how it may help improve your home network.

My eero Outdoor 7 didn't come with a power supply, how do I power it?

The eero Outdoor 7 is designed as a power over ethernet device. To function properly, the Outdoor 7 requires a PoE+ (802.3at) connection or better. We offer a bundle that includes both the eero Outdoor 7 and the weatherproof PoE+ power adapter for purchase. A standalone PoE+ power adapter is also available through Amazon.

If you don't wish to purchase the PoE+ weatherproof power adapter, you can power the Outdoor 7 with the eero PoE Gateway or a PoE+ capable injector/switch. Please ensure any equipment used is capable of at least PoE+, standard PoE will not provide a large enough power budget to properly power the Outdoor 7. For more information on PoE, see: Does eero support PoE?

The eero Outdoor 7 does not use the 6 GHz band, and is a dual band router. Is it still WiFi 7 capable?

WiFi 7 is a technology standard that improves performance across the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. Because its improvements are not exclusive to the 6 GHz frequency, WiFi 7 can also be used together with dual-band devices like the eero Outdoor 7.

Is there a way to remotely monitor the operating temperature and device status of the eero Outdoor 7?

The eero Outdoor 7 is rated for outdoor use in direct sunlight, and is water and dust resistant.. It can safely operate in temperature ranges of -40°F to 131°F (-40°C to 55°C), so no additional considerations need to be made as long as outdoor conditions remain in these ranges.

If you are concerned about the operating temperature of your eero Outdoor 7, you can contact support for more detailed information.

Why does the eero Outdoor 7 have only one Ethernet port? How can I hardwire additional devices to the eero Outdoor 7?

When designing the eero Outdoor 7, considerations were made to reduce the number of external ports required for operation. Each port on the device represents a possible pathway for foreign dust, dirt, water or other contaminants to compromise the functionality of the device. As such, the eero Outdoor 7 ships with one Ethernet port to ensure hardwired functionality while minimizing the risk of malfunction due to exposure.

Although the eero Outdoor 7 has only one Ethernet port, it still supports the use of Ethernet switches, along similar lines to other eero products. In addition to the standard requirements for compatibility that all switches should adhere to when working with eero, special consideration must be given to ensuring that the switch is adequately protected from the elements in the event that it is located outdoors.

Is there a way to “force” outdoor devices to connect to the eero Outdoor 7, instead of other eeros in my home?

Client devices will self-determine the appropriate eero to connect to based on a variety of factors including relative signal strength, frequency visibility, and the power of the adapter on the device itself.

While devices further from the home will generally connect to the eero Outdoor 7, signal overlap may occur if the Outdoor 7 is located too close to other devices on the network.

To reduce the risk of overlapping signals, try placing your Outdoor 7 unit further away from the rest of the indoor eero units in your home. Since the Outdoor 7 has greater range than indoor eero units, you will be able to set it up in an area with minimal existing WiFi coverage.

What is the best way to determine optimal placement of the eero Outdoor 7?

Prior to setup, be sure to examine the installation guide that ships with the eero Outdoor 7 for general advice on installation. The eero App will also provide you with detailed instructions and advice on how to determine the optimal position for the eero Outdoor 7 prior to more invasive setup steps, such as drilling holes in the wall for the mounting bracket.

Where can I go if I need replacement mounting brackets, sealing nuts, etc?

If you are in need of replacement for small parts, the eero Customer Service team can submit a request to have replacement parts shipped to you. Replacement part shipments are limited to the following parts:

  • 1 M22 seal gland
  • 1 Mounting bracket
  • 2 Leveling screws
  • 2 Vinyl siding clips
  • 2 Drywall anchors (30mm)
  • 2 #8 stainless steel screws (15x30)

If you receive a supply of replacement parts, be sure to check the bottom of the box for any parts that may have shifted around during shipping.

Can I use the eero Outdoor 7 with non-eero WiFi devices (indoor or outdoor)?

The eero Outdoor 7 is designed to work exclusively with other eero WiFi products. Because it uses proprietary eero TrueMesh technology, it is incompatible with non-eero WiFi routers and will not be able to directly integrate with a non-eero network. If you would like to connect traditional outdoor WiFi extenders to the eero Outdoor 7, you can do so to increase the overall range of your network, but these devices will not utilize eero’s True Mesh technology that another eero would.

Is the eero Outdoor 7 compatible with all eero models?

The eero Outdoor 7 is backwards compatible with all eero hardware. However, using a WiFi 7 device with other non–WiFi 7 equipment may result in a reduction of performance across the network when compared to expectations on a fully–WiFi 7 equipped network. To ensure optimal performance, eero recommends using the eero Outdoor 7 with other WiFi 7–equipped eero hardware.

Will eero Outdoor 7’s range and connectivity be affected by the construction material of the surface it is mounted to? Can I mount it to a metal surface?

As with other routers and WiFi devices, the eero Outdoor 7 is subject to certain signal issues when operating near or on metal surfaces. WiFi radio waves do not travel as easily through metal as stucco, wood or other building materials, so keep this in mind when deciding where to mount the eero Outdoor 7.

The eero Outdoor 7 can be mounted to a metal pole, although the unit does not ship with a strap for this purpose. With that being said, if you wish to mount it on a pole, instructions are available in the installation guide.

Can the eero Outdoor 7 be removed from its mounting bracket after being installed?

Once the mounting bracket has been installed and is securely in place, the eero Outdoor 7 can be removed by sliding the device up and off of the bracket. Since the bracket uses a pressure fit to hold the eero in place, no additional tools are required to remove the eero from the mounting bracket.

What is the best way to reboot or reset the eero Outdoor 7 if needed?

The eero Outdoor 7 has a reset button located on the bottom of the unit, next to the Ethernet port and status LED. To perform a soft reset on the eero, press and hold the button for about 7 seconds, or until the LED changes to yellow. To perform a hard reset, press and hold the button for about 15 seconds, or until the LED changes to red.

If you would like to reboot the eero without physically accessing it, you can do so by tapping on the eero once it has been connected to your network, and selecting Restart [eero name] from the blue “...” menu at the top right corner of the screen.

Note: If the eero Outdoor 7 is mounted to an elevated surface, a ladder or similar tool may be needed to reach the device safely.

Do I need an eero PoE Gateway to use eero Outdoor 7? Is eero Outdoor 7 compatible with other kinds of PoE switches?

An eero PoE Gateway is not required to use or power the eero Outdoor 7. The eero Outdoor 7 is compatible with any PoE+ switch or injector with a CAT5e (or better) Ethernet cable. If you intend to power the eero via a power adapter, you can purchase eero’s 30W PoE+ power adapter, which comes either included with the eero Outdoor 7, or sold separately.

Can I paint my eero Outdoor 7?

eero does not recommend painting or otherwise altering the external casing of the eero Outdoor 7 in any way. Painting the unit, applying stickers, or other modifications will void the warranty for the eero.
