Coverage scan

The eero App now includes a new feature called Coverage scan, a comprehensive utility suite that allows users to perform a variety of diagnostic tests on their network. Coverage Scan is designed to assist users who may be experiencing connectivity issues with their network, with the goal of providing effective and actionable advice for improving performance.

The primary purpose and function of Coverage Scan is to evaluate the connection strength between devices on the network and the eero the device is connected to. Based on the results of the scan, the app will provide recommendations to improve performance. Refer to the information below for additional details on Coverage scan, including how to use it, and how to best implement the advice it offers.

Starting a scan

By default, a Coverage scan can be initiated by tapping on the notification card present near the bottom of the home screen in the App. You can also access Coverage scan by going to Settings > Troubleshooting

How It Works

Whenever a Coverage scan is initiated, the app begins compiling connectivity information on all currently connected devices, with the goal of assessing each device as having “strong” or “poor” connectivity. A device connection is considered “strong” if the signal strength for that device is considered good or better. A network scan result is considered healthy if there are zero devices with a poor connection.

Signal strength

The eero App rates connection signal strength according to a 1-5 scale, where 5 represents a strong connection and 1 represents no connection. The full scale is shown below, and can also be viewed by tapping the info button on the top right corner of the App screen:

Single strength breakdown chart: Strong, Good, Okay, Poor, and No Connection.

If a Coverage scan confirms good connections for all devices on the network, the App will inform you that everything looks good. If one or more devices on the network have poor connections, recommendations for further action will be given. More information explaining strong and poor connectivity can be found below:

Poor connection

Devices that have low overall signal strength scores are considered to have poor connections. In practice, this typically manifests as intermittent connectivity issues and slow connection speed.

Connectivity is related to proximity and signal clarity. Devices that have poor connections may be located further away from eeros, may be nearby objects that impede radio waves (such as thick walls), or may be connecting through layers of construction material.

Strong connection

Devices that have high overall signal strength (good or better) are considered to have a strong connection. Strong connections are recommended for optimized performance across all types of wireless devices.

App Recommendations

Once the Coverage scan has concluded, the App will display any relevant recommendations for resolving potential issues. The recommendations provided will vary depending on the type and severity of the connectivity problem. The list of general recommendations is shown below:

  • Everything looks good–Your network is in good condition and no further action is required.
  • Adjust eero placement–One or more eeros should be relocated to optimize signal transmission.
  • Add an eero–Additional wifi coverage is recommended to improve network performance.

Adjust eero placement

Connectivity issues may be resolved if an eero can be moved closer to the device(s) displaying connectivity issues. You may experiment with moving an eero so that it can provide a stronger, clearer signal to a specific area of the network coverage space. Use the Coverage scan feature as needed to test placement configurations so that you can find a location that suits your needs. You may also refer to our Help Center guide on eero placement for more information.

Add an eero

If your network has several devices that are distant from the nearest eero, and the app detects that moving the eero closer to those devices would not be practical, the app will recommend adding an eero to the network to improve connectivity. Tapping on the link provided by the recommendation will redirect to eero’s Amazon store page. Alternatively, if you already have an additional eero to connect, you may use the setup process to connect that eero to the network.

Additional Resources

If you still have additional questions or require further assistance, you can access additional resources by tapping Need more help? At the bottom of the Coverage scan page. Tapping this link will provide you with quick access to a number of relevant articles from eero’s Help Center.

Beyond these resources, the eero Customer Support team is available to provide live assistance. You can contact Support by accessing the link in Need more help? or by using the contact information provided in our How do I contact eero support? article.
