What is eero Labs?

eero Labs is our experimental playground to bring forward new networking features and concepts to eero networks. By default, all eero Labs features are turned off, and you can enable and disable them as you wish.

The features found in eero Labs are innovative and experimental. Every feature is tested extensively, but are considered as beta and may still have some room for improvement.

With eero Labs, our team will be pushing forward new features in future app releases. Today, eero customers can enable the following features:

Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming (formerly Smart Queue Management)

Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming, formerly known as Smart Queue Management (SQM), intelligently shapes how wifi traffic is queued to reduce latency and limit the amount of bandwidth certain devices use. For busy networks, this can improve the quality of voice, video calls, and online gaming.

Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming makes the most difference with wifi activities that require high bandwidth and low latency. For example, when you’re streaming 4K video while also browsing the web or playing a video game. While Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming ensures every device still has bandwidth access, you may see slower performance on certain devices.

Band Steering

Many devices are dual-band capable, meaning they support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. 5 GHz is typically less crowded and offers higher performance. Band steering tracks whether a device has previously been seen on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and if so attempts to “steer” it to 5 GHz to improve long-term device performance. Band steering does not guarantee that a device will choose the 5 GHz band, but helps to favor that preference.

Local DNS Caching

We use names, like eero.com, to surf the web. Computers instead rely on numbers. DNS turns domain names into IP addresses—similar to how phone books used to map business names to phone numbers. Local DNS caching stores this information at the network-level, speeding up page loads and providing a faster internet experience.

This feature requires an eero network not placed in bridge mode. Learn more.

WPA3

Get added security for connected devices that support the WPA3 standard—the latest in wifi encryption. By enabling WPA3, eero can also transition any devices that do not support WPA3 to instead use the WPA2 standard. Certain devices may not be capable of backward compatibility and won’t be able to connect if WPA3 is turned on. To determine whether a device uses the WPA3 standard, check its details in the eero app.

To enable eero Labs features:

  • Open the eero app
  • Tap the Discover icon at the bottom of the screen
  • Tap on eero Labs
  • Switch the toggle on for any of the features
