About Cellular internet

The Ring Alarm Pro has a cellular modem that supports internet via cellular data connections. When the Ring Alarm Pro is set up as the gateway to the network**, it provides backup WAN access and a direct cellular connection for the Ring Alarm system via the 24/7 Backup Internet feature (Ring Protect Pro subscription required1 ).

**As of eeroOS v6.12.2 (released 10/25/2022), cellular backup internet is now available when using Ring Alarm Pros that are added to an existing eero network as an extender, instead of requiring the Ring Alarm Pro to be the gateway for the network.

How does the Ring Alarm Pro work?

The Ring Alarm Pro can be set up either using a wired ISP WAN connection or a cellular backup WAN connection (Ring Protect Pro subscription is required for 24/7 Backup Internet). If you have an ISP outage, devices on the network can still access the internet via cellular data.

What happens when the internet goes out?

Your Ring Protect Pro plan offers cellular backup via the 24/7 Backup internet feature when you need it. This means that if your primary wired internet connection goes out, or if you don’t have internet service, you can use cellular data to connect all devices on your wifi network to the internet.

The 24/7 Backup Internet feature included with the Ring Protect Pro plan gives you 3GB of data every month. If you need more, you can opt into Extra Data, and you’ll only pay for data you use.

Note: If you don’t opt into Extra Data and use up your 3GB for the month, Alarm Pro will switch to Alarm Cellular Backup, which provides access to only some Ring Alarm security features. When an internet connection is restored, Alarm Pro will automatically switch back to using it. Your 3GB will reset on the first day of the new billing cycle, and unused data does not rollover to the next month.

What happens when the power goes out?

When the power goes out, you have two options to keep your Ring Alarm Pro on.

Alarm Pro has an internal backup battery inside the Base Station that can provide backup power. When using the internal battery, you may have limited access to Alarm features only.

Ring Power Packs (sold separately) can provide external battery backup for your Alarm Pro. Connect up to four fully-charged Power Packs to a single Alarm Pro to keep it working for hours and all Alarm Pro features will be available.

Ring Power Packs can also be used to provide backup power to your eero 6 Extenders (sold separately), which will keep your expanded wifi network up if you lose power.

Where can I see how much data my Ring Alarm Pro has used?

The Ring app lets you manage 24/7 Backup Internet data usage for your Ring devices (if you have a Ring Protect Pro subscription).

How do I manage which device has access to 24/7 Backup Internet?

After setup, you’ll use the two apps to manage your device:

  • The Ring app lets you manage 24/7 Backup Internet data usage for your Ring devices (if you have a Ring Protect Pro subscription).
  • The eero app is used to manage which devices can use the internet, you can toggle on 24/7 Backup Internet access for each non-Ring device on the device detail screen.

Will all eero features work when my network is using 24/7 Backup Internet?

Many features are supported when using 24/7 Backup Internet; however, the following features are not supported when your network is on 24/7 Backup Internet.

  1. Port forwards
  2. DDNS (eero Plus feature)
  3. UPnP
  4. IPv6
  5. Automatic speed tests while on 24/7 Backup Internet; however, you can still run a user-initiated speed test in the eero app, but the data sent and received will count towards your Ring Protect Pro data usage.
  6. Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming

1 Compatible Ring Protect subscription required (sold separately). Extra data charges may apply. Cellular data is provided by a third party carrier. Coverage, uptime, technology, and speeds will vary. May require backup power if the power goes out. Visit ring.com/alarm-pro for more details. Ring Alarm Pro is designed to be used as a router, as using Ring Alarm Pro as an extender may impact your ability to utilize Ring Protect Pro features.
