Can I connect wired devices to my network using an Ethernet switch?

An Ethernet switch (also called a network switch) physically connects devices like computers to the same network.

You can connect additional devices or eero nodes to your network by Ethernet (hardwired connection). Simply connect a switch to any eero's Ethernet port. Once you've connected a switch, the eero port will configure itself automatically.

Note: Always plug the switch into your eero and not directly into your modem.

All eeros support gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps / 100 Mbps / 10 Mbps), and this type of switch is the best for most homes. However, if your internet service plan includes speeds above 1 Gbps, you may want to consider an Ethernet switch that supports such speeds.

Should I use a managed or unmanaged switch?

To ensure the best possible experience, we recommend using an unmanaged network switch, especially when hardwiring eeros to one another. Unmanaged switches do not include network controls that can affect data throughput and simply add additional Ethernet ports to your network.

Managed switches generally come with enhanced functionality that, while useful for managing traffic in various situations, can negatively impact the throughput of your eeros. Though a managed switch can be made to work with the eero system, we generally recommend using unmanaged switches as their ease of use combines well with our system.

In the event that a managed switch is used on your network, we recommend disabling features such as Spanning Tree Protocol (STP/RSTP), Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP), and removing any Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) or Quality of Service (QoS) features.
